Euro early exits

With the Preliminary round of the Men's Euro Championships now complete it’s time to give avid readers an update. The top three sides from each group qualify for the Main round where two groups of six teams complete another round robin. Teams to take an early flight home are Ukraine, Serbia, Sweden and Hungary. I know there is a number of local handball supporters who are disappointed with the non-progression of Serbia, whose only result was a draw with Iceland. Serbia’s lack of results meant that the hosts Austria, who beat Serbia 37:31 were able to take third spot in their qualifying group into the Main round.

The clear strong qualifiers were Croatia, who didn’t drop and points in defeating Norway, Russia and Ukraine in taking out Group A. Poland and Spain also qualified strongly only losing points in drawn matches. This early form also seems to have carried through to the Main round for Croatia and Poland who are leading Group 1 and Group 2.

Men’s Euro Day 1 Results

We’re updating our post from yesterday with some Euro Championship results. Unfortunately the hosts Austria, couldn’t use the home ground advantage to much effect going down 29-33 to defending champions Denmark. Also in Group B, the match between Iceland and Serbia couldn’t be decided ending in a 29-29 draw. Serbia came from behind to score the last four goals with Serbian goalkeeper Darko Stanic saving a seven metre penalty in the final throes of the match.

Other notable results included Poland registering their first Euro Championships over Germany 27-25 and the Russians coming out victors in the Eastern grudge match against Ukraine. For all the results go to http://www.ehf-euro.com/Men-s-EHF-EURO-2010.359.0.html
